LOOKING UP – Wondering what to do after you’ve been to the Erie County Fair on Saturday? Not far away is the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center on Big Tree Road in Hamburg, where you can have a look at the stars – clouds permitting – at Penn Dixie’s Mid-Summer’s Night Adventure.
Telescopes will be set up from 8 to 11 p.m. to view Saturn and Mars near each other on the southwest horizon, and the star cluster M13, which will be at its zenith. After 10 p.m., shooting stars should start to appear from the annual Perseus Meteor Shower, which will peak after midnight.
Gates open at 5 p.m. for fossil hunting and viewing of sunspots and solar flares through filtered lenses. After dark, youngsters will be given complementary glow sticks and led down to the fossil pits by guides to dig for more fossils. Diggers should bring a pail, digging tool and a flashlight.
Admission is $7 adults, $6 children, free for Penn Dixie members. Call 627-4560 or visit www.penndixie.org.
