The Williamsville School Board will appoint a new board member tonight to fill the remaining year of the seat left vacant when Stephanie Gelber resigned last month.
Eight eligible candidates applied for the seat and will each make five-minute presentations to the board at the special open meeting at 7 p.m.
After the presentations are completed, the board will vote to appoint a new member, and that person will be immediately sworn in. No other business is slated to be discussed, though supporters of Williamsville South High School basketball coach Al Monaco are expected to attend the meeting in support of the coach, who was relieved of his basketball and golf coaching duties last week.
The candidates for the board, listed in alphabetical order, are:
• Peter U. Bergmann, president and CEO of Sisters Hospital. He has children attending Maple East Elementary and Transit Middle schools.
• Shonda Brock, who works in medical sales and served in the U.S. Army. She currently has children attending Maple East.
• Carolyn Giambra, a former library and instructional specialist with the school district, who served on the board in 2004-07. She has two grandchildren in the district.
• Michael Kane, who graduated from Williamsville North in 2006.
• Anthony J. Lafornara III, a Buffalo Public Schools teacher. He has children at Maple East and Transit Middle.
• Dr. Khalid S. Mahran, a physician. He has children at Casey Middle and Williamsville East High schools.
• Susan D. McClary, a teacher at Sweet Home Central High School. She has a grandchild attending Casey Middle.
• Bunnise Lynn Neenos, a retired Williamsville teacher. Her children are graduates of Williamsville South High School.
The board will meet in the District Office board room, 105 Casey Road, East Amherst.
There are no opportunities on the agenda for the public to speak at this meeting.
The next regular board meeting will be held Sept. 11.
