THE PRICE IS RIGHT – There’s one more free admission day from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum, 180 Thompson St., North Tonawanda. To ride the carrousels – the 1916 hand-carved model or the 1940s kiddie version – will still require a 50-cent token. Games and crafts also will be available in the Children’s Gallery.
The admission-free day comes courtesy of North Tonawanda Mayor Robert Ortt, City Attorney Shawn Nickerson and City Clerk-Treasurer Scott Kiedrowski. SPECIAL DAY – Reservations are needed by Saturday for the 28th annual picnic to honor Special Olympians from Erie County, their families and friends on Sept. 9 in the grove at the George F. Lamm Post 622, American Legion, 962 Wehrle Drive, Williamsville.

STEPPING OUT – Gilda’s Club Western New York will hold its inaugural Gilda’s Red Door Run and Fun Walk on Sept. 12. It includes a 5K race sanctioned by USA Track & Field and a one-mile walk, with the race beginning at 6:30 p.m. from Gilda’s Club headquarters, 1140 Delaware Ave. at West Ferry Street.

FURRY FRIENDS – Pet-related businesses – pet stores, fencing companies, carpet cleaners, pet day care providers and others – are invited to become exhibitors at the Maddie’s Pet Rescue Project Pet Expo on Oct. 19 and 20 at the Fairgrounds Event Center in Hamburg. Local pet rescue groups also are invited. More than 3,000 people are expected to attend.
Booths are available for $100 until Saturday. For details, call project coordinator Kara Lee at 343-0253. Proceeds benefit the Maddie’s Pet Rescue Project, which is working to make Erie County one of the first no-kill communities in the nation.

CENTENARIAN AND MORE – Loretta Zazynski Loffredo celebrates her 102nd birthday today at the Harris Hill Nursing Facility in Lancaster. A Brooklyn native, she was born into a family of nine brothers and sisters, and is the last surviving member of her family. She has two children, six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
During World War II, Loffredo assisted the war effort as a riveter at the Bell Aircraft plant. While living in Cheektowaga, she later worked as an elevator operator at the downtown L.L. Berger Co. store. She wore a navy blue suit with white gloves and sat on a stool in the elevator, announcing each floor as the doors opened.
Loffredo’s first husband, Joseph Zazynski, died in 1958, and her second husband, George Loffredo, died in 1981.
