A 23-year-old Rochester woman remained hospitalized in critical condition late Sunday after she ran into traffic and was struck by a motorcycle in the traffic gridlock surrounding Saturday night’s Jason Aldean concert at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center, state police reported.
Troopers say the crash took place at about 8 on State Route 77 in the Genesee County Town of Darien.
That road was the scene of lengthy delays for people waiting in their vehicles to get into the concert at Darien Lake, which recently instituted a new parking policy in an attempt to cut down on underage drinking in the privately operated lots that surround the concert venue.
Starting Aug. 17, pedestrian access to the Performing Arts Center was restricted to passenger drop-off at a designated area near the main gate. All concertgoers are now required to park in free on-site lots, and Darien Lake built a fence along Sumner Road to help enforce the new policy.
In Saturday night’s accident, Jessica Freeman was a passenger in a car in the northbound lane of Route 77, and the vehicle was at a standstill when she got out and tried to cross the road, troopers said in a news release.
Freeman was struck as she ran into the path of a motorcycle operated by Frank Pfalzer, 35, of Akron.
She was airlifted to Erie County Medical Center, where she was being treated in the trauma Intensive Care Unit.
Pfalzer was not injured and was not ticketed by troopers.
The crash comes seven weeks after Casey Parnell, 20, a Mumford resident, was struck and killed July 2 by a minivan as he was standing on the shoulder of Sumner Road during the Rascal Flatts concert at Darien Lake.
Parnell had been kicked out of the concert and was making his way back to the Hill when he was hit, The Buffalo News reported at the time.
Saturday night, Genesee County sheriff’s deputies charged 15 people with trespassing, criminal mischief, harassment, disorderly conduct and other charges during the concert, and they ticketed 52 people for underage drinking or possession of a fake ID, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
